Tyson Fury vs Wladimir Klitschko 2016 Betting Odds

by JohnnyBet from

Two of the biggest bruisers in world boxing look set to go toe-to-toe once again after Wladimir Klitschko triggered the rematch clause after his shock defeat to Tyson Fury.

The 6ft 9in Brit was given little chance by the bookmakers – he was as generously priced as 5/1 in some quarters – but it was he who controlled the fight and the Ukrainian who has dominated the heavyweight scene for more than a decade.

It was like a cat toying with a mouse, and the almost shell-shocked expression on Klitschko’s face as Fury switched from orthodox to southpaw and back again was clear for all to see. As era-defining fights go, this was right up there.

So will the rematch go the same way again, or will Wladimir have his revenge?

1. Betting Odds

Some bookmakers have priced up the bout early, and even though a date and destination for the dust-up have yet to be revealed bet365 has stepped in and priced both fighters up at 10/11.

That’s not much of a surprise given the ease with which Fury triumphed in the first fight, and it is perhaps surprising that the bookies can’t tell the two apart in their pricing. The judges cards in that first tussle read 115-112, 115-112 and 116-111 in the Brit’s favour, and while those numbers look close in truth that is as one-sided as a world heavyweight contest can get.

History tells us that when proud boxers, who have dominated their weight division for so long, suffer a defeat they then become mere shells of the men they once were. Fury, meanwhile, is 27, unbeaten and his career is very much in the ascendancy. Forget the pre-fight antics – the press conferences dressed as Batman, the singing, the showmanship – Fury is a serious fighter.

2. Where the Money Is

There was fear in Klitschko’s performance in Dusseldorf back in November. He threw a few stiff left jabs but seemed reluctant to chuck his famed right-handed bombs; probably as an attempt to counter Fury’s powerful left hook. But when a champion changes their style to counteract that of the challenger, you can rest assured that their performance level will drop accordingly.

Take a look at those judges’ scorecards again, and remember that Fury had a point deducted for repeatedly striking the back of Klitschko’s head. The margin of victory is huge, and if the bookmakers were pricing this fight up without preconceptions of these two fighters then Fury would be a heavy odds-on favourite.

History tells us that the Ukrainian has used his size and strength advantage over many of his opponents – the likes of beefed-up cruiserweights David Haye and Bryant Jennings spring to mind – to get the job done, and this is one of the few times that he has actually been dwarfed by an opponent in the other corner.

You get the impression that Fury is ever on the brink of a meltdown, but if he manages to hold himself together then he has the speed, strength and technical advantage over Klitschko, who looked every one of his 39 years of age.

If the Ukrainian is to have any success he needs to be aggressive and fight on the front foot; Fury was put down by Steve Cunningham in their title eliminator. But there was no sign of that in the first fight, and so backing Fury at 10/11 with bet365 looks the smart bet.
