Egor Gerasimov - Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina scored one of the biggest wins of his career by upsetting the reigning ATP Delray Beach champion Hubert Hurkacz in the second round of ATP Montpellier on Thursday, 7-5 6-2.
The talented Spaniard, who took a tumble and turned his ankle in Biella Challenger a few days ago, suffered a similar injury in the second set of his second-round match against the Pole. However, fortunately for Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Hubert Hurkacz was so bad on the day as he failed to capitalize.
This is the former Boys' Wimbledon champion Alejandro Davidovich Fokina's third quarterfinal appearance in four indoor hard court events (on the main tour). The 21-year-old posted some excellent results on the surface at the closing stages of the 2020 season, such as the semifinal and quarterfinal in the first and second leg of ATP Cologne, respectively, and the round of 16 in Paris Masters.
Egor Gerasimov followed up his superb straight-set win over the former world #1 Andy Murray with yet another straight-set win over Aljaz Bedene in the second round. Two of his four sets so far in this campaign have concluded in the tiebreaker, 7-6 6-1 and 6-4 7-6.
This was a much-needed confidence-boosting run for the big-serving Belarusian, who suffered a humiliating and embarrassing defeat at the hands of the slam main draw debutant Aslan Karatsev in the second round of the Australian Open a couple of weeks ago, 0-6 1-6 0-6.
Egor Gerasimov enjoys playing on indoor hard courts, but he lost both of the quarterfinal matches that he played on the surface last year against Felix Auger Aliassime in Marseille and Frances Tiafoe in Nur-Sultan.
Though Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is the talented player of these two, his recent fitness struggles give Egor Gerasimov an excellent opportunity to make a rare semifinal appearance at this level.
