Sassuolo - Cagliari
Both teams have scored in 15 of Sassuolo’s last 16 matches.
There have also been over 2.5 goals scored in 15 of the last 16 contests to feature the Neroverdi.
Sassuolo and Cagliari shared a 2-2 draw on this ground in November.
Cup clash should provide entertainment, with Neroverdi involved
Alessio Dionisi’s Sassuolo are known for providing entertainment, although they can move quickly from the sublime to the ridiculous, as their last two results show. Sassuolo hammered an impressive Empoli team 5-1 in their last away game, before suffering a 4-2 home defeat to Verona at the weekend.
Sassuolo have seen both teams score in 15 of their last 16 games, and over 2.5 goals have been scored in the same number of contests. They fell at the first hurdle in the Coppa Italia last term, and will hope to avoid doing the same when they face struggling Cagliari, who came from two goals down to snatch a 2-2 draw here in November.
Despite a 1-0 loss at Roma, Cagliari have now won two of their last three games, as Walter Mazzarri’s team make a bid for Serie A survival. 2-1 wins over Sampdoria and Bologna have given the Sardinians hope, although they have also shipped 13 goals in their last six games.
Back goals in an end-to-end affair
Although Cagliari could see the cup as an unwelcome distraction from their battle for survival, they have drawn their last five games with Sassuolo, showing their ability to compete. Furthermore, since 1st November, the Sardinian teams’ only away defeats have come at giants Inter, Juventus, and Roma.
Given the nature of Sassuolo’s recent results, backing both teams to score and over 2.5 match goals looks a strong play, while a 2-1 home win looks a decent correct score prediction.
