It’s never too early to get excited about the Cheltenham Festival, and even the bookmakers are getting involved ‘early doors’ by publishing their odds way in advance of the 2019 edition of the meeting, which will be held in mid-March.
The likes of William Hill, Ladbrokes and bet365 have already priced up the festival’s big races with their ante-post markets. To the uninitiated, ante-post means a betting market that is opened way in advance of the start date, with the prices offered a reflection of that.
You can back some fantastic horses at huge prices already, but be warned that if they don’t run in the race you back them – or suffer a catastrophic loss of form – you will not be refunded.
This is a tough one to predict as you never quite know how well novices’ form will hold in the next 12 months or so, but there is certainly temptation in taking the best odds of 17.00 available on Annamix.
The four-year-old is highly fancied by those in the know, and coming from the Willie Mullins yard – a man known for producing a Cheltenham winner or two – has every chance of starting the festival with a bang for punters.
Supreme Novices 2019 Early Betting Odds - Best odds
Buveur D’Air has been installed as the 4.50 favourite by William Hill to complete a remarkable hat-trick of victories in the Champion Hurdle in 2019; a feat not achieved since the great Istabraq in the late 90s.
It’s a good price as well as you sense that Nicky Henderson will post his seven-year-old in this race, while the others towards the head of the antepost market – Samcro, Melon, Summerville Boy – may just have their targets set elsewhere.
There are some intriguing entries in the Champion Chase ante-post market, but punters should be focusing their attention on the early favourite, Altior.
Nicky Henderson’s horse has won three times at the festival already, and took the spoils in the Champion Chase in March. He may get a run in the Gold Cup, but surely an attempt to retain this crown is more likely. Altior is available at 2.85.
Footpad (7.00 with William Hill) is an interesting one. He was hugely impressive in taking the Arkle at this year’s festival, and a step up in class next year. But whether that comes in the Ryanair Chase or the Gold Cup is anybody’s guess.
At the time of writing, Footpad is the bookies favourite in the Cheltenham ante post betting to win the Ryanair Chase at 6/1 with Bet365. Having enjoyed a five race winning streak, Footpad failed to finish the Poplar Square Chase at the beginning of November and the distance remains a question mark.
Balko des Flos came out on top in last year’s renewal and is expected to feature in many Cheltenham ante post betting tips leading up to the race. At 7/1, Balko des Flos is one of the favourites.
Other contenders for the Ryanair Chase include Un de Sceaux at 7/1, who won this race in 2017 and was second last year plus Waiting Patiently at 9/1, both with Bet365.
6. Cheltenham Gold Cup 2019 Betting Odds
One of the main talking points of the 2018 festival was the performance of Presenting Percy, who bolted home in the RSA Chase as the 3.50 favourite.
That optimism sees the seven-year-old installed as the 7.00 ante-post favourite with Ladbrokes for the Gold Cup, and he will certainly be in with a chance if the going is heavy once again in 2019.
That soft footing certainly helped Native River, who is 8.00 with William Hill to repeat his 2018 heroics. However, the horse he beat in March – Might Bite – will certainly have something to say about that, and if the going is somewhat faster than it was this year then his ante-post price of 8.00 with Ladbrokes will then look outstanding odds indeed.
These are the early Cheltenham 2019 odds. The closer the Festival, the more bookies will have it in their offer and we will keep you updated.
