When the draw was made for the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League Round of 16, every team would have been hoping to avoid Manchester City. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out for FC Basel who were drawn with the Premier League Champions elect.
The first leg in Switzerland was expected to be the tougher of the two for Manchester City and Basel were hoping to take something from the game to the second leg at the Etihad Stadium.
However, much like the draw itself, things did not turn out in favour of the home team and Basel lost the match 4-0 at St Jakob Park, giving them a massive mountain to climb in Manchester.
1. Man City vs FC Basel Betting Odds
Considering the result in the first leg, it is little surprise to see Manchester City come into this match as the big favourites to win the game, priced at 1.14 with Ladbrokes.
Pep Guardiola’s team have been excellent on home soil this season and prior to their match with Chelsea on the 4th March have come out on top in each of their previous 19 home games in all competitions.
In the Champions League, Manchester City have remained unbeaten in their last 13 home matches, winning 10 of them and they have won each of the last 4, defeating Monaco, Shakhtar Donetsk, Napoli and Feyenoord.
Therefore, Basel make the trip to the Etihad Stadium with not only a near impossible task to qualify but a massive job on their hands just to get the victory. This is reflected in their odds of 26.00 to win the match.
Basel have picked up wins at CSKA Moscow and Benfica away in the Champions League this season but prior to that their record is poor, having failed to win in 5 attempts. Even in both their wins in the group stage this season, Basel have failed to record the size of win required to qualify for the quarter-final.
Manchester City are 1.00 to qualify for the next round of the Champions League, with Basel out a 51.00.
2. Manchester City v Basel Predictions
Despite being known for scoring plenty of goals, Manchester City have scored no more than 2 goals in any home Champions League match this season and have won by no more than a 2 goal margin.
If Guardiola was to rotate some of his players for this match, Basel may find they are on the end of a lower score than the first leg. Manchester City to win by 2 goals is 4.00 with Bet365.
Basel are likely to set their stall out to defend in this match and their first thought will be to avoid another big defeat. This could see Manchester City register 2 or fewer goals in this game, as they have done for their other home Champions League matches this season.
Manchester City under 2.5 goal is 3.70 with Ladbrokes.
3. Team News
Team news and Manchester City will be without full-back Benjamin Mendy, who has cruciate ligament damage and is expected back in April. Other than any knocks picked up in the Premier League, every other player should be available.
Basel will travel to England without defensive midfielder Taulant Xhaka and he will be a big loss to the Swiss team. Both Germano Vailati and Eder Balanta could miss the match due to injury.
