Germany vs Cameroon
FIFA Confederations Cup
25 June, 16:00 (CET)
Olimpiyskiy Stadion Fisht
The bookmakers’ favourites to win this Confederations Cup 2017 are Germany, and if they are to make good on that status then they must find a way past the African Cup of Nations champions, Cameroon.
1. Germany as Favourites
The Germans’ record in major international tournaments speaks for itself: four World Cups, three European Championships and seven other final appearances. And yet remarkably they have never lifted the Confederations Cup trophy – their previous best is a semi-final appearance in 2005 - and so this generation of players will be keen to make their own little stamp on their nation’s history.
Cameroon, incidentally, reached the final of this competition two years prior to that, losing 0-1 after extra time to France, and so their pedigree in this event is assured.
But fast forward back to today and we see a Germany side in rude health – despite a couple of vulnerabilities. Defending has never been a major problem for them, although they do lack a commanding central defensive partner for Mats Hummels.
And then there’s the absence of a natural goalscoring centre forward. Mario Gomez is your archetypal number nine but he’s had a pretty average season at Wolfsburg, while Thomas Muller – as brilliant as he is – is not really an out-and-out frontman.
While those gaping holes in their squad may affect their chances at the World Cup next year, they should still have enough quality to see off Cameroon here and go deep into the Confederations Cup.
The Africans took the honours at AFCON earlier this year, but have the odd distinction of winning just three of their six matches inside 90 minutes, so it was a victory tainted to some degree. They are a solid, workmanlike team rather than one blessed with enormous talent, but then they have lost just once in this past calendar year.
Germany will know they have been in a game, that’s for sure.
2. The Bookies Choice - Odds
It’s hard to imagine a game in which Germany wouldn’t be the bookmakers’ favourite, and so their price of 1.40 against a fairly ordinary Cameroon side is fair enough.
The Africans for their part can be backed at 9.00 to upset the odds, while the draw is available at 5.00.

3. Germany vs Cameroon Betting Tips
Would you ever bet against Germany? Their results in the past couple of years suggest you would be crazy to do so, and there isn’t enough offered by this Cameroon outfit to suggest going against the reigning World Cup winners is a smart move.
Even with those two problem areas outlined above, they still have so much class at their disposal: names like Thomas Muller, Mesut Ozil, Toni Kroos and Leroy Sane just roll off the tongue.
Cameroon’s strength in AFCON came from trying to keep things tight defensively before attempting to nick the win on a rare foray forward. Will that tactic work against Germany? You wouldn’t think so, because if you give this German outfit time to build attacks and pick you off then you are asking for trouble.
There’s nothing else for it: expect a comfortable Germany win here.
The World Cup winners head into the Confederations Cup on the back of a disappointing outcome at Euro 2016….they will be desperate to get their hands on another trophy here.
