Saul Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin Betting Tips & Predictions

One of the most eagerly anticipated boxing matches of the modern era is heading for a rematch!

Saul Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin, two of the best pound-for-pound fighters on the planet, fought to a thrilling draw back in September 2017, and a rematch was instantly ordered.

But contract wrangling’s and a failed drugs test from Alvarez have delayed proceedings, although this week it has been announced the Alvarez vs Golovkin II will take place in Las Vegas on September 15 – almost a year to the day of their first encounter.

The original clash was highly controversial, with one judge scoring the bout 115-113 in Golovkin’s favour, 118-110 to ‘Canelo’ and the third judge pointing it as a draw.

Most onlookers had GGG winning a narrow verdict, with the eight-point mark in favour of Alvarez almost laughably bad from that particular judge. The Kazakhstani was the busier of the two fighters and won many of the rounds in eye-catching fashion; particularly the ‘championship’ rounds at the end of the contest. The first fight was the third highest grossing bout in history, and as long as the judges get their acts together we should be in for a cracker in September’s rematch.

But who will prevail? Let’s take a look in our Saul Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin betting tips.

1. Alvarez vs Golovkin Betting Odds

The Alvarez vs Golovkin betting odds have been released, and based upon the patterns of the first fight they have made Golovkin their comfortable favourite at 1.55.

But Alvarez should not be discounted, especially with such a vociferous section of Mexican supporters expected at the T-Mobile Arena, and his price of 2.50 will appeal to plenty.

2. Alvarez vs Golovkin Predictions

Some felt GGG had won the first fight, others felt that Alvarez was classier in his work. Most would accept the 118-110 judging in his favour was wholly ridiculous.

And so a rematch will surely be a similarly close-fought contest, with the Mexican starting well and producing some noteworthy shots before seemingly fading in the second half of the contest and taking some heavy punishment in the latter stages.

If we accept that the two fighters are at similar levels, then the bookies’ pricing seems faintly ridiculous, with Alvarez painted as a longshot outsider despite going toe-to-toe with one of the pound-for-pound best on the planet.

Maybe the fact that Golovkin had a tune-up fight is key; his second-round knockout of Vanes Martirosyan at least enabling him to shake some of the cobwebs off and experience competitive action in the ring.

Canelo has been suspended for months after testing positive for Clenbuterol, and he can’t even appeal for his boxing licence again until August, let alone strap on his gloves.

Perhaps GGG’s activity gives him the edge, although we certainly aren’t expecting a one-sided encounter. Alvarez is smart and has never been knocked out, so backing the Kazakhstan powerhouse to win on points at 3.50 is arguably the sensible path for our Saul Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin predictions to follow.
