Tunisia vs Senegal
2017 Africa Cup of Nations
Sunday, 20:00 pm (GMT+1)
Two teams with rather mixed fortunes in the African Cup of Nations will meet on January 15 when Tunisia and Senegal look to improve upon past performances in the competition.
The golden generations for these two sides came in the early 2000s: the Tunisians won the AFCON tournament of 2004 and finished fourth just four years prior to that, while Senegal finished second in 2002 and reached the quarter final stage in the hostings either side of that.
But since then? Well, it hasn’t been a vintage era by any means, with a pair of last eight appearances from the Tunisians the best that either could muster.
Could 2017 be the year when they halt their decline and reach the business end of the competition?
1. Tunisia vs Senegal Betting Tips
The qualifying campaign offered little insight into the fortunes of these two teams, with both finishing top of their respective groups with consummate ease.
But Senegal were especially impressive. They were one of the few teams to progress with six wins from six, and while their group, which featured Burundi, Namibia and Niger, clearly isn’t the best, there was still a job to be done. They did it with aplomb.
Tunisia, meanwhile, topped Group A but not without a few stumbles along the way. A defeat to Liberia was perhaps the low point, and really this was a campaign driven by their opening 8-1 demolition of hapless Djibouti.
A quick scan of this Senegal squad reveals that, in truth, they should win this contest comfortably. From front to back they possess quality: Kalidou Koulibaly is a Champions League centre half with Napoli, Idrissa Gueye and Cheikh Kouyate is a powerful central midfield combination with its roots in the English Premier League at Everton and West Ham, while up front the partnership of Sadio Mane and Mame Biram Diouf promises pace and power in abundance. On paper at least, it is an outstanding side.
The Tunisian squad might be less familiar to the general football community, with only Aymen Abdennour and Wahbi Khazri, of Valencia and Sunderland, familiar to millions. The rest general ply their trade domestically in Tunisia, so surely Senegal’s extra experience at higher level will count here?
2. Betting Odds
It is the better record in this tournament that the bookmakers have gone for here, rather than Senegal’s through qualifying passage, with Tunisia priced as underdogs by BetWay at 3.20.
The Senegalese can be backed at 2.30 meanwhile, with the draw available at 3.20.
3. Where the Money Is?
Surely this will be the year that the Senegalese perform to expectations in AFCON? They have a solid side sprinkled with outstanding talent, and the ability of players like Mane and Diouf to produce something special out of the blue could well be the difference in this opening match. We’ll be backing the Senegal win here.
But as this is the opening encounter for both of these sides in the African Cup of Nations 2017 we can expect a low-scoring affair as they look to establish themselves in the competition. As such, Under 2.5 Goals is an excellent investment.
