Argentina vs Croatia Betting Tips

Argentina vs Croatia Betting Tips

There is always one group in the World Cup which is labelled the ‘group of death’ and Group D at the 2018 edition is one such group.

Argentina meet Croatia in the second round of matches in this group and with Nigeria and Iceland also taking part, any dropped points in this game could prove costly for either team.

This Wold Cup is being billed as the last time Lionel Messi can cement his place as the best player in the history of the game, by leading Argentina to the title. You must go back to 1986 to find the last time Argentina lifted the trophy and they lost in the final four years ago.

Croatia started life promisingly as a nation by finishing third at the 1998 World Cup. They have since failed at the group stage each time they have qualified and have their work cut out to avoid the same fate in this tournament. So who might take points in this fixture? First round for Argentina and Croatia

Argentina surprisingly drew against Iceland and are now at a tough path to proceed to the next round. The match showed that if you play patiently in the defense, and diminish the key players, you can actually beat or at least draw against last World Cup finalists. As long as Messi won't be able to take responsibility for the play organisation, they will struggle.

Croatia on the other hand won against Nigeria 2-0 but looking at how they play, we wouldn't be very optimistic on how will they play for the rest of the tournament. Even though they won, it didn't look like they know what to do and Nigeria being such a weak opponent, we can't tell how they will be against stronger side, but all of these information will impact Argentina vs Croatia betting tips.

Given their tag as one of the favourites to win the 2018 World Cup, Argentina will be expected to win every match in their group and the bookmakers have them priced at 2.20 to take 3 points from this game.

Argentina topped their group at the 2014 World Cup, winning all three of their matches. They will be hoping for more of the same in Russia and with the talent at their disposal, especially in attacking areas, there will be no excuse if they fail to qualify for the Round of 16.

Croatia will probably be Argentina’s toughest test in this group and they have plenty of talented players of their own. Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic play for Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively and arguably make Croatia’s midfield stronger than Argentina’s.

If Croatia’s midfield duo can get on the ball and dominate in the middle of the pitch, Croatia will have a chance and they can be backed at 3.90 with bet365 to win the game.

In truth, if this match ends level, Croatia would probably go away happy with one match remaining against arguably weaker opposition. The draw is on offer at 3.32 with 1XBET.

2. Argentina vs Croatia Prediction

Croatia were forced to come through a play-off tie against Greece to qualify for the World Cup and while their record was not great in the group, they performed well defensively. Only two teams in the whole of UEFA qualifying had a better defensive record than Croatia.

Argentina laboured in their qualifying campaign and could muster only 19 goals in 18 games, fewer than any other team which qualified from South America. Therefore, we could be in for a very close game, where goal scoring chances are at a premium and the draw and under 2.5 goals is available at 4.20 with William Hill.

However, with the attacking talent on show, this game may see only handful of chances but some of them are sure to be taken. The 1-1 correct score is 6.50 at Ladbrokes.

Last comment Pumpkin Spice Pumpkin Spice A tough call, and probably one of the most anticipated games. The Argentinian team looks a clear favorite on paper, but recent Messi struggles may have put some doubt in the effectiveness of the team.

While Croatia never picked up and showed the attacking prowess they were expected, they still triumphed over the Nigerian side 2:0, in a show of attacking football. It was refreshing to see Croatia with so many players venturing in the opponent's third, something that felt severely lacking during the previous manager Cacic's reign. However, the current manager over-emphasis on fielding four attackers may leave the vulnerable to the counter attack from the Argentine excellent attack.

Argentina on the other hand, leave a bitter and sour taste with the draw with Iceland and will definitely want to pick three points from this one, specifically to shut any doubters up. Failure to do so will likely see them second in the group, possibly battling for the place against Iceland, and will have a tougher way forward against France in play-offs. They need to win this game.

On another hand, Croatia doesn't need a win here, it is reasonable to think they will win Iceland, and therefore secure a second place even if they loose here. In effect, Croatia would be happy with a Draw here, they would still be eligible for the First place.

Because of this, I think the starting eleven will be different on both sides. I expect Dybala to start instead of Angel DiMaria, and Messi will definitely try to push through the left fullback position (arguably, the Croatia's weakest point, Strinic doesn't look comfortable around the ball, making mistakes, and Perisic periodically forgets to track back) - I'd expect Argentina to otherwise stay the same, and look to concentrate more on punishing from counter attack then Building the possession as they did against Iceland - while I fully expect Croatia to field a more defensive-minded players specifically Brozovis on the right flank instead of Rebic, and Badelj instead of Modric in the back, with more then likely Kremaric playing instead of Madzukic in the top of the team.

I expect the line ups;
Argentina: Cabalerro, Tagliafico, Mascherano, Marcos Rojo, Otamendi, Salvio, Biglia, Dybala, Messi, Meza, Aguero. (4-3-3)
Croatia: Subasic, Vida, Lovren, Strinic, Vrsalko, Badelj, Rakitic, Modric, Brozovis, Perisic, Kramaric. (4-2-3-1)

I expect Croatia to play cautiously, defensively packed two banks of four, and try to wear down the Argentine team through building possession in their own Third, planning on a Draw. I expect Argentine to go for the win, but recent lackluster performance of both DiMaria and definitely Messi might mean they will lack the penetrative prowess, with only Dybala maybe providing the might they need, and if they play like they did versus Iceland, with Croatia's defense considerably better then Iceland's, I don't see them scoring.

Therefore, I predict a DRAW.
