The Socceroos will prepare for their Confederations Cup campaign, which starts on June 17, with a friendly match against that competition’s most decorated team, Brazil.

The South Americans are the reigning Confederations Cup champions and have lifted the trophy on four occasions in all, but unfortunately they won’t be in Russia after failing to qualify for the event.

The Australian set-up will use this game as a way of settling on their preferred starting eleven for that competition, while for Brazil this is part of a tour Down Under which also sees them take on Argentina at the Melbourne Cricket Ground a few days prior to this fixture.

So the Brazilians will have plenty of time to acclimatise to the conditions… will that be enough to see them home here?

1. The Bookies Choice

Australia may have home advantage, but that could count for nothing given the class of this Brazil squad; that’s in the view of the bookmakers anyway, who have made the South Americans their favourites for this match at 1.48.

The Socceroos are available to bettors at 6.85, while the draw can be backed at 4.74.

2. Australia vs Brazil Preview

Given the talent at their disposal, it is amazing to see how much Brazil have struggled in recent times. Their problems date back to the World Cup of 2014, which they hosted, where a series of stuttering performances ultimately led to a 1-7 humbling by Germany in the semi-finals. In front of their own supporters, that was a real watershed moment for the Samba boys.

That was compounded by a failure to even get beyond the group stages at 2016’s Copa America – the first time a Brazilian side had failed to do that since 1987 – and while winning the gold medal at the Olympic Games of 2016 was a positive, clearly Brazilian football is in a state of flux at present.

And that is hugely surprising when you look at their squad of players. There’s a defence shored up by David Luiz and Thiago Silva, a midfield blessed with the likes of Fernandinho, Philippe Coutinho and Douglas Costa, with an attack featuring Roberto Firmino, Gabriel Jesus and Hulk. Neymar is the mere icing on the cake!

So there is absolutely no reason for Brazil to struggle….and their recent results show a resurgence. They have won nine games in a row, scoring 25 times and conceding just twice. Under the guidance of head coach Tite, things are moving in the right direction.

That explains the size of the task facing Australia. They will be backed by a passionate support on home soil, but with their Confederations Cup campaign commencing a few days after this game you do wonder how focused they will be for what is essentially just a showpiece friendly against one of the most recognisable teams on the planet.

Brazil have plenty to play for in keeping their winning run going and confidence is high in the camp, and so they have to be backed here at the 1.37 available.

Luiz, Coutinho, Firmino, Hulk, Neymar….the star quality in this Brazil side just oozes off the page. They will expect to keep their winning run going here.
