Unfortunately, France Football has announced that 2020 Ballon d'Or will be cancelled:
For the first time since 1956, the Ballon d’Or will take a break. There will be no edition in 2020, because it turns out, after thoughtful consideration, that all the conditions are not met. We believe that such a singular year cannot -and should not- be treated as an ordinary one. - Pascal Ferré - fragment of France Football official statement
It is almost that time of year when the finest footballer on the planet is crowned, with the highly sought-after Ballon d’Or the prize for the individual considered to have outperformed all others.
Even in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the Ballon d’Or vote is expected to go ahead as planned, and in December the traditional ceremony – whether it takes place in person or virtually – will be held to crown the winner.
It is the most prestigious individual prize in football simply because it is voted for by players, coaches and journalists, and without club allegiances it is typical that the best player lifts the famous trophy.
In this Ballon d'Or 2020 betting preview, we will take a look at the odds for all of the players before dissecting the chances of all of the main contenders.
And then, at the end, we should have enough evidence to suggest some value Ballon d'Or 2020 betting tips too.
First held in 1956, the Ballon d’Or’s purpose was originally to give journalists a chance to vote on their player of the season.
The voting was expanded to coaches and captains of international teams in 2010 - 2016, but since 2017 when you look at the history books this trophy has been handed by the journalists only.
Lionel Messi has won more editions of the Ballon d’Or than anyone else (six), closely followed by his old nemesis Cristiano Ronaldo on five.
Other notable winners include decade-defining players: Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini and Marco van Basten were among the very best in the business in the 1970s, 80s and 90s respectively, and they each won the Ballon d’Or on three occasions.
2. 2020 Ballon d’Or Winner Odds
It’s true that the sportsbooks offer us the best guide as to who has the best chance of winning Ballon d'Or.
And in their odds, the bookies have made Robert Lewandowski their favourite for the honour at a price of 3.50.
And then comes the traditional Ballon d’Or favourites of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who are available at Golden Ball odds of 5.00 each.
Kevin de Bruyne is another who will draw interest at 6.00, and there’s an interesting range of outsiders too which includes Kylian Mbappe (17.00) and the
Liverpool trio of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk, who can all be backed at 17.00.
And if you really want to try your luck, why not have a flutter on the likes of Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and Antoine Griezmann – both are available at 101.00!
3. Who Will Win the Ballon d'Or in 2020?
For some football fans, Robert Lewandowski might be something of a surprise favourite for the biggest prize available to an individual player, but another stellar season for Bayern Munich he must surely come into the conversation to win the Golden Ball 2020.
If Bayern Munich find its way to Champions League final, there will be only one favourite to win the Ballon d'Or 2020
In all competitions this year, the Polish striker has scored a scarcely believable 51 goals, including 34 in his team’s run to the German Bundesliga title and eleven in six Champions League games.
And here's what Lewandowski had to say when asked about winning the award this year:
We'll see. What I try to do is to always show the best of myself, win trophies and score more goals. But that's something that comes with collective trophies. That's the most important thing.I don't even think about the Ballon d'Or, even if, in my life, I believe that anything is possible. - Robert Lewandowski for France Football
It is extraordinary output, and shows why he is so highly-rated in the who will win the Ballon d'Or in 2020 discussion.
It has not been the best of seasons for Lionel Messi or Barcelona, and yet it still comes to something that a ‘bad’ season for the Argentine has still yielded 27 goals and counting. However, with the Catalan outfit struggling to win anything this term, the six-time Ballon d’Or winner can perhaps be overlooked in our Golden Ball 2020 betting tips.
Another perennial winner of the Ballon d’Or is Cristiano Ronaldo, and with Juventus still potentially winning the Serie A title and the Champions League he certainly enters the conversation once more. But the Portuguese ace has scored just twice in the Champions League this term, and his odds are way too short here.
Kevin de Bruyne hasn’t won anything so far with Manchester City this season, and the Champions League is their last hope of glory. A quality performer, there are arguably more deserving candidates on this list than the Belgian.
An outsider pick might just be Virgil van Dijk. The defender finished second in the poll last season – showing how well respected he is with the voters – and Liverpool of course have won the Premier League title this term. He probably has a better chance of winning than those odds of 17.00 suggest.
4. Ballon d'Or Predictions
Breaking the stranglehold of Messi and Ronaldo on the Ballon d’Or has proven very difficult in the past – only Luka Modric has won it other than that pair since 2008.
However, the 2019/20 season has not been stellar for either of those modern day legends, and so this is another year where their dominance of this trophy is halted.
When you look at sheer output alone, surely Robert Lewandowski is the deserving favourite. Scoring 50 goals in a season is a ridiculous achievement, and while players in German football tend to get overlooked in the hunt for the Ballon d’Or – you have to go back to Mattias Sammer in 1996 for the last winner from the Bundesliga – Lewandowski has simply been too good to ignore.
If you wanted to be bold in your Ballon d’Or predictions, you might even argue that Messi and Ronaldo could struggle to finish in the top three of the vote!
That will leave opportunities for others, and so the outsider of our Ballon d’Or 2020 betting tips has to be Virgil van Dijk.
The stylish defender finished second in the voting last season, and in the end he was just seven individual votes away from tying with Messi. That was one of the closest Ballon d’Or races in history, and shows how well respected the Dutchman is by his peers. Liverpool may not have won the Champions League this term but they have triumphed in the Premier League, ad so a 17.00 Van Dijk is worth a second glance.
Of course, when Champions League will return, Ballon d'Or 2020 betting odds might change a bit but we don't think it will be a revolution...
