Burkina Faso vs Cameroon
2017 Africa Cup of Nations
Saturday, 20:00 pm (GMT+1)
Stade de l’Amitié Sino, Libreville (GAB).
With 2017 being a year that ends in an odd number, football fans can rejoice in the knowledge that that means it is an African Cup of Nations year.
This fascinating tournament brings together the finest teams from the continent together in what is often a clash of styles and cultures, but the intriguing nature of many of the matches makes them an excellent proposition for punters wanting to have a bet and those simply wishing to watch some exciting football at home.
Group A of the competition will put hosts Gabon against Guinea and the two opponents here, Burkina Faso and Cameroon, who will contest this match on the opening night of tournament play.
1. The Bookmakers Choice
This, like many of the other African Cup of Nations matches, will be a fascinating one. Cameroon, a young and vibrant team boasting many players who ply their trade in Europe’s finest leagues, take on a Burkina Faso side not blessed with star quality but an excellent team spirit; they finished runners-up in this very tournament back in 2013, you may recall.
Who will prevail in a match that looks likely to decide who progresses from Group A and who says a rather premature goodbye.
The bookmakers have decided to err on the side of caution for this AFCON curtain raiser, and who can blame them? At first glance these appear to be two very evenly-matched teams.
Cameroon have been made slight favourites at 1.83, with the plucky Burkina Faso coming in slightly behind at 4.75. The draw can be backed at 3.30.
2. Burkina Faso vs Cameroon Betting Tips
It probably won’t come as any surprise to learn that Cameroon qualified for AFCON 2017 with ease. In a qualifying group containing South Africa, Gambia and Mauritania, the Greens went through their six matches unbeaten (W4 D2 L0) and conceding just two goals. They had booked their passage to Gabon by June with two games to go; the definition of easy peasy.
Of course, it helps when your squad is made up of quality players who are employed at top clubs throughout Europe and beyond. So Lyon’s Nicholas N’Koulou and Besiktas’ Vincent Aboubakar have both played in the Champions League term, while the likes of Edgar Salli, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Allan Nyom are plying their trade in Ligue 1, the German Bundesliga and the English Premier League respectively. That extra experience at a high level will surely help on the international scene.
Burkina Faso are less well stacked with familiar names, but their journey to Gabon was as equally comfortable. They won four of their six games and, like Cameroon, only conceded a pair of goals as well, although it must be said their qualifying group companions were of a lesser quality.
What is good about this Burkina Faso side is that there is bags of international experience, with at least eight players boasting 80 caps or more and Bakary Kone, Charles Kabore and Jonathan Pitroipa offering some 200 between them!
The opening matches in big tournaments like this are usually cagey affairs as both teams feel each other out, and as such the draw appears to be the smart bet here.
