Burkina Faso vs Tunisia Predictions

by JohnnyBet from

While many pundits felt that Tunisia had an outside chance of qualifying for the knockout phase of AFCON 2017 from Group B at the expense of the flawed Algeria, few would have suggested that Burkina Faso stood any chance of progressing from a bracket that included hosts Gabon and the weakened-but-still-effective Cameroon.

But that is exactly what has happened, and in truth the underdogs deserve their place in the last eight. A pair of 1-1 stalemates with Gabon and Cameroon opened the door for the Stallions, and they took their chance with aplomb in a comfortable 2-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau. Barring their run to the final in 2013, this is the first time that Burkina Faso have qualified for the second phase of an African Cup of Nations competition in nearly two decades!

With Senegal readily fancied to top Group B, the runners-up spot looked set to be contested by the individual brilliance of Algeria and the superior teamwork and organisation of Tunisia. On this occasion, it is the team ethics of the Tunisians that have won the day. Their campaign got off to a rather inauspicious start with a 0-2 reverse at the hands of the Senegalese, but an excellent 2-1 win over the Algerians put them in the box seat and they held their nerve with an outstanding first half display against Zimbabwe: running in four goals before eventually triumphing 4-2.

So now the pair will meet in the first quarter-final of AFCON 2017 in Libreville on January 28. Where is the smart money going?

1. The Bookies Choice - Betting Odds

It’s a tough match to call, as you would expect a quarter-final of any cup competition to be, and the bookmakers have been rather stingy in their prices as a result.

Tunisia can be backed at 2.25 with industry-best bet365, with Burkina Faso available at 3.40 and the draw after 90 minutes backable at 3.10.

2. Burkina Faso vs Tunisia Betting Tips

You can’t really fault the efforts of Burkina Faso thus far. They have scored in every game and conceded just two goals – one of which was netted by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang; one of the finest strikers on the planet. The Stallions have surpassed expectation but deserved all of their success.

The Tunisians were poor in their first outing against an admittedly excellent Senegal side, but the manner in which they bounced back – scoring six goals in just 85 minutes combined against Algeria and Zimbabwe, gives them plenty of hope.

However, there are caveats to that. One of those goals was an own goal and two were penalties, so the North Africans perhaps aren’t the free-flowing outfit that their results suggest. Their capitulation in the second period against the Zimbabweans – essentially losing the second half 0-2 – will also be of grave concern.

And that’s why we are happy to give Burkina Faso a hope here. They might not win the match but we certainly expect them to overachieve their expectations once again, so back them with a +1.25 Asian Handicap. That way you will you earn a profit if they win, draw or lose by a single goal.
