Davis Cup 2017 Predictions

The 2017 edition of the Davis Cup has moved onto the quarter final stage, and tasty fixtures are available for punters to sink their teeth into across April 7-9.

Italy travel to Belgium to take on their hosts on the hard courts of Charleroi, while Novak Djokovic’s Serbia – bet365’s favourites for the whole tournament at 4.00 – have home advantage over a dangerous Spain outfit.

But the obvious standout matches of the round see Australia entertain the United States, and 2015 winners Great Britain make the tough trip to the clay courts of France.

Who will go on to the semi-finals?

1. Australia vs USA Davis Cup Predictions

Usually, the home side in a Davis Cup tie has some kind of advantage as they get to choose what surface the rubber will be played on; whether that’s super-quick hard courts or the slower clay courts that reward the better movers and negate the advantage felt by powerful servers.

That logic isn’t really in place here though as all members of both of these teams are at their best on hard courts, and so that is the surface the Aussies have chosen to play on.

They will be led once again by Nick Kyrgios, the enigmatic young talent who many feel could become the world’s best player in a few years time if he can somehow improve his attitude to the game. On his day, Kyrgios is devastatingly good.

You would assume that playing for your country might bring out the best in you, and despite many disputes between the player and the Australian tennis governors over recent years he was back to his best in a convincing win over Jan Satral in his nation’s comprehensive 4-1 win over the Czech Republic in the last 16.

Kyrgios will be joined in singles action by another promising youngster Jordan Thompson, who accounted for the talented Jiri Vesely in his last Davis Cup outing, with Sam Groth and John Peers taking on doubles duty. The Aussies can call upon a ‘fifth man’ too: their passionate home support, who will create quite an atmosphere.

The only downside for the ‘Roos is that the choice of hard court plays right into the USA’s hands. Both Jack Sock – who is in fine form at present – and John Isner are big serving power players, and they will look to take the game to the Aussies on their terms. Waiting in the wings are Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey; no slouches when it comes to hitting the ball hard.

You would fancy the Aussies to take the doubles rubber, and so the overall tie will come down to the singles; specifically, how Kyrgios fares. He is not the most reliable player to pin your hopes on, and so backing Team USA is wise.

2. France vs Great Britain Davis Cup Betting Tips

The British won this tournament in 2015, but any hopes they had of recapturing their crown appear to be all but gone with the news that world number one Andy Murray has suffered an elbow injury and will miss this fixture with France.

The French are many peoples’ dark horses for the Davis Cup this year, with a fine rotation of singles players in Richard Gasquet, Gilles Simon, Jo Wilfried-Tsonga and Gael Monfils aided in the doubles by Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert, who lifted the Wimbledon pairs trophy in 2016.

The British pair of Dan Evans and Kyle Edmund are improving rapidly, and both stand a great chance of a long and fruitful career in tennis. But these clay courts are not their favourite, and we expect France to claim a comfortable victory governed mainly by singles success. Back them with bet365.
