Monaco vs PSG Predictions

by JohnnyBet from

There’s an intriguing contest in France’s Ligue 1 on Sunday even as reigning champions Monaco tackle the side that looks destined to rip the trophy from their hands this season, PSG.

The Parisians have benefitted from renewed investment from their Qatari-based financial backers, and it was that group who sanctioned the purchases of Neymar, one of the best players on the planet, and Kylian Mbappe – ironically one of Monaco’s most important players in their title run of 2016/17.

So there is plenty to play for on Sunday at Monaco’s Stade Louis II stadium, both in terms of points and in the hosts restoring a bit of the pride stolen from them by PSG’s purchase of their best player. But who will take the spoils?

1. AS Monaco vs Paris Saint Germain Odds Preview

While PSG have gotten stronger, Monaco have certainly grown weaker. The sale of Mbappe, Tiemoue Bakayoko (to Chelsea) and Bernardo Silva (to Manchester City) has ripped a hole in their title-winning squad, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the likes of Thomas Lemar follow that trio out of the exit door.

PSG have romped clear at the summit of the Ligue 1 table with 35 points after embarking on a 13-game win streak (W11 D2 L0), although Monaco are not a million miles back on 29 points (W9 D2 L2).

The bookmakers are rather coy on the chances of Monaco, with the defending Ligue 1 champions as long as 5.45 to win this game.

The pedigree of PSG speaks volumes, and so does their price of 1.61 – the sportsbooks expect them to win this match. The draw can be backed at 4.70.

2. Monaco vs PSG Betting Tips

There is sure to be plenty of talent on show on Sunday, and yet the contest could boil down to a shootout between the respective teams’ hottest marksmen.

PSG boast the considerable talents of Edison Cavani, the Uruguayan who has netted an obscene 15 goals in just 13 Ligue 1 appearances this term.

But Monaco can call upon a prolific frontman of their own in Falcao, a player much maligned in English football following his spell at Manchester United, but his pedigree in France cannot be questioned. The Colombian has notched 13 goals of his own so far this season.

We might assume Monaco’s home status to be an advantage here, but unfortunately they haven’t always enjoyed the best of things at the Stade Louis II stadium. They are unbeaten on home soil in domestic action, but against elite-level opposition they have struggled. Just look at their Champions League outings in front of their own supporters, in which they have been defeated by Besiktas (1-2), Porto (0-3) and Leipzig (1-4).

And we can’t ignore the head-to-head stats either, which show that PSG are unbeaten against their opponents here in four league and cup encounters in 2017, with three wins ad a draw. Indeed, roll that out a bit further and we note that Monaco have only beaten PSG in two of their last fifteen meetings.

So there’s nothing else for it. PSG are the better team, and the history books support the notion that they will defeat Monaco once again on Sunday. Those odds of 1.61 are fair game.

The two best teams in French football collide on Sunday, but who will take the honours: defending champions Monaco, or champions-elect Paris Saint-Germain?
