Will the Wembley curse strike down Tottenham once more? It’s not been a good run for the North London outfit at their new, temporary home, with defeat to Chelsea backed by a draw with a Burnley side they really ought to be beating.
That mixed bag of form follows what was a tough introduction to life at Wembley last season, when Spurs played their three home matches in the Champions League. Heavy defeats to Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen soon followed.
So you can forgive the Tottenham players for feeling a little apprehensive about playing their football at the 90,000 seat arena, and Borussia Dortmund must be licking their lips in anticipation of a potential three points. Peter Bosz’s side have started the Bundesliga campaign with resounding victories against Wolfsburg and Hertha Berlin, and the feeling is that the new manager has shaken the yellow-and-blacks from their slumber of the Thomas Tuchel years.
German side are very much a live contender here – can Spurs end their Wembley hoodoo in this hugely important encounter?
1. Bookies Choice - Best Odds For The Upcoming Match
The bookmakers clearly aren’t quite sure what to make of Tottenham at the moment. They have made them favourites for this match, as you would expect, but at a lofty price of 2.30. Even they are admitting they have no idea as to how this match will pan out!
There will be plenty of punters ready to lap up the 3.10 available on a Dortmund victory, that’s for sure, while the draw is available at 3.30.
The key narrative for punters to unravel in this match is this: is there such a thing as a home ground hoodoo? Are Tottenham crippled by fear when they play at Wembley? Are the extra dimensions (Wembley’s pitch is wider and longer than White Hart Lane) making a difference to the team’s effectiveness?
These are question marks that, for the time being at least, we have no answer to. Losing to Chelsea and Monaco is nothing to be ashamed about – apart from surrendering local pride against the former – but failure to defeat Burnley, and the manner of their 0-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen in last season’s Champions League, does raise eyebrows.
Are Dortmund a more reliable proposition for punters to get behind? They lost to both Monaco and Benfica on their travels in last season’s edition of this competition, but also beat a decent Sporting Lisbon outfit and earned a point at the Bernabeu against Real Madrid. There is little consistency in those results.
New boss Peter Bosz appears to have brought Dortmund out of their shell, and they seem to be playing their favoured attacking football once more according to the shot data from their opening pair of matches.
4. Borussia vs Tottenham betting prediction
Borussia Dortmund will meet Tottenham head on, and won’t be afraid to press forward when the opportunity arises. They may have lost Ousmane Dembele, but Christian Pulisic appears to be a ready-made replacement. And with the goals of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang anything is possible, so back the German side with Draw No Bet protection at 2.10.
The opening gameweek of the Champions League is of huge importance, so can Tottenham get their campaign off to the best possible start or will Borussia Dortmund take advantage of their opponent’s home ground blues?
