Premier League champions Chelsea will begin the defence of their title with a rather plum game against Burnley at Stamford Bridge on Saturday August 12.

1. Easy Win for Chelsea?

You may recall that the Blues did not start all that well last season under Antonio Conte, and it was only around November time with the shift to the 3-4-3 formation that they started to play like the champions that they would latterly become.

Burnley’s start to last season was similarly inconsistent, and that theme continued throughout the campaign. Realistically, the Clarets were indebted to an outstanding home record (W10 D3 L6) in staving off relegation, which they managed to do by six points. Their away form (W1 D4 L14) spoke volumes.

So if this was a match taking place in, say, April, we would be backing an easy home win for sure. But as the first game of the season after three months off the playing field is levelled somewhat, and Chelsea will find Burnley refreshed and reinvigorated after the summer break.

Can the Blues start the defence of their title in the best possible fashion?

2. The Bookies Choice - Odds

There’s no question in the minds of the bookmakers as to this match is going to go: Chelsea have been installed as the early 1.25 favourites.

The draw can be backed at 6.50 – a result that featured in precisely zero of Chelsea’s 18 league outings at Stamford Bridge.

They were vanquished twice on home soil though, and Burnley can be backed at 15.00 for the unlikeliest of repeats.

3. Chelsea vs Burnley Prediction

Having won 17/19 home matches in 2016/17, there’s no prizes for guessing how desperate Chelsea will be to get off to a winning start in front of their own fans at the Bridge.

It’s been a fairly quiet summer for them off the field, with minimal transfer activity in and out of the club. The continuing saga of Diego Costa’s future rumbles on, with the tabloids in the UK reporting that Conte allegedly sent a test message to the Spaniard stating that his services will not be required this term.

But seeing that the Blues refused to join Manchester United in the hunt for Romelu Lukaku suggests those accusations might be wide of the mark, and nobody would be surprised if Costa pulled on a blue shirt come August 12.

If he does then Chelsea will presumably be at full strength, and will continue with same starting eleven that lifted the Premier League trophy a few months ago.

Sean Dyche has worked hard to bring new faces in at Burnley, and while Jack Cork and Jonathan Walters add top flight experience to the ranks it is a pair of departees who have raised more eyebrows.

Defender Michael Keane was an integral part of Burnley’s survival bid last season, while George Boyd was a tireless worker on the left flank. Their absence will surely be felt this term.

And it is really hard to ignore Burnley’s abject away form last season, so Chelsea will surely win this match.

For betting value, take Burnley with a +2.00 Asian Handicap at 1.64. They only lost 4/19 away matches last season by more than two goals.

Will Diego Costa start for Chelsea? Will the champions have the same levels of desire this season? Will it matter, given how poor Burnley were away from home last term?
