The W.S. Cox Plate is a Moonee Valley Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for horses aged three years old and over under Weight for age conditions.
The race covers a distance of 2,040 metres and is held each year at the Moonee Valley Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia and this year will take place on the 28th October. The race is Australia's second richest weight-for-age race with stake money of A$3 million, only falling behind the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
The race is named in honour of W.S. Cox, the founder of the Moonee Valley Racing Club. In 2016, Winx became one of many famous horses to win the race twice, including Phar Lap, Flight, Tobin Bronze and Sunline.
1. Favourite is Only One - Winx
Considering she has won the previous two Cox Plate races in 2015 and 2016, it’s little surprise to see Winx come into this one as the 1.26 favourite with William Hill.
In the past 10 years, only 3 of the favourites have gone on to win the race but that record almost becomes irrelevant when you have a horse of the calibre of Winx. Kingston Town was the last horse to win the Cox Plate three times in a row and did so back in 1982.
Although this was some time ago, it shows it can be done and Winx is looking good to seal her place in the history books. There is very little to suggests we will see a winner other than Winx in the 2017 Cox Plate unless she fails miserably or does not start the race.

2. Other Interesting Bets
However, there are some interesting place bets (William Hill) available including Happy Clapper at 5.25. He has won the Tab Epsom Handicap and finished second behind Winx in the GEO Main this year. If there is any horse which can come close to Winx its Happy Clapper and although you would be brave to back him to win the 2017 Cox Plate, he should place.
Looking further down the pecking order and Tom Melbourne at 13.50 also looks capable of placing in the 2017 Cox Plate.
Tom Melbourne won the Alb Cup last year. He also finished second, after Happy Clapper in last Epsom race. The distance is the only question mark over Tom Melbourne but he looks capable and makes a good bet to place at the 2017 Cox Plate.
