The National Basketball League, known as NBL for short is the top professional basketball league in Australia.
While Australian Rules Football, cricket, rugby league, soccer, rugby union and, tennis are well-known to be popular sports in Australia, basketball has a strong following of fans and the NBL is a big event in the country.
Not only does the NBL contain the top basketball teams in Australia, it is also open to teams in New Zealand but as things stand, there is just one representative from New Zealand in the league.
1. NBL History
The NBL is a relative newcomer in terms of professional sports leagues in Australia and was established in 1979. The first few seasons took place during the Australian winter, between the months of April and September but it wasn’t long before this was changed to the summer months.
The NBL made this change to avoid competition and allow the spotlight to fall on basketball when the winter football sports were in their off-season.
Having enjoyed a boom in the 1990’s, the NBL struggled for some time in the 2000’s and several teams dropped out the league, including a team from Singapore. However, the 2009/10 season saw a revamp of the NBL and live coverage returned to terrestrial television, giving everyone the chance to watch games. 2. NBL 2017/18 Betting Tips
The 2017/18 NBL season started on the 5th October following the 2017 NBL Blitz, an event which sees all 8 league teams participate in a pre-season tournament. The event was won by Melbourne United and they started the new season as the favourites priced at 2/1 with Bet365.
New coach Dean Vickerman has been heralded as the man to make it happen and he has a good starting group of players each of which boosts some NBA experience.
Their bench also looks good but can Vickerman make the players gel to land Melbourne United their first NBL title?
Waiting in the wings are Perth Wildcats, who started the campaign at 5/2 with Bet365 to win the 2017/18 NBL. Having retained the services of Bryce Cotton, Perth Wildcats were also going to be one of the leading contenders this season and the fact they have kept the core group of players which led them to glory last season, makes them an enticing prospect.
A Potential outsider to land the 2017/18 NBL title are New Zealand Breakers. The Breakers have tasted success in the NBL many times, so know what it takes to get the job done. They just missed out on the finals last season and it will be interesting to see how Edgar Sosa and Devonte Newbill blend into the team.
New Zealand Breakers have made a good start to the season and can be backed at 5/1 with Bet365 to win the 2017/18 NBL.
