Unless you have been living under a rock for the past fifteen years, then you realize that when it comes to the NFL one thing is for certain: with Tom Brady, the New England Patriots are always going to be in contention. Even though the Patriots have won four Super Bowls, it would appear that they are primed to make a fifth run. What are their chances to pull it off? Brady is nearing the twilight of his career, but he is still showing that he has the same fire in his belly. Could it be possible? Let's look at some of the particulars:
1. Tom Brady's Leadership Ability
In 2001, Drew Bledsoe went down with a devastating injury in the second game, and Tom Brady had to step up to take his place. While the Patriots would go on to lose that game and fall to 0-2, they would quickly realize they had something special in Tom Brady. He would finish out the season by going 11-3 and the Patriots would eventually take on the St. Louis Rams, who were then known as "The Greatest Show on Turf." The Patriots would win in an upset, largely because of the strong work ethic and determination of Mr. Brady.
This is one of the main reasons why the betting sites even now would tend to side with the Patriots returning to the Super Bowl. But there are other reasons as well.
2. Tom Brady's Professional Record
If you are looking for consistency, you would be hard-pressed to find it better in any other quarterback other than Tom Brady. According to Pro Football Reference, Tom Brady has a regular season of 180-52 not to mention he has over 60,000 career passing yards. There was a period of time where the Patriots also had 21 consecutive regular season wins as well.
3. Tom Brady's Supporting Cast
Like many other years, Tom Brady also has a solid supporting cast. For starters, LeGarrette Blount is already a thousand-yard rusher and there is still 3 games left in the season. Julian Edelman has racked up almost 800 receiving yards, and Trey Flowers has a solid five sacks on defense.
4. The Overall Record of the Team
Finally, one of the other things that increases the betting odds would be the current overall record of the team. At 11-2, they are not only in playoff contention but they are set to win their division as well. If they continue to win all of their remaining games, they will probably earn a first-round bye in the playoffs, which is only going to help improve their chances.
Of course, as with anything else, there are also minuses which also can decrease the chances of whether Tom Brady can take his team to the big dance again or not. Some of these mitigating factors would include the following:
4.1 Brady's Age
At 37, Brady is older and his skills are probably somewhat diminished. Of course, compared to other players his age there is no question he is definitely still at the top of his game.
4.2 Other teams
Another factor that could diminish the odds would be other teams. Yes, the Patriots have a solid record, but there have been times where it has been shown that there are a few chinks in their armor. For example, in one of their Super Bowl losses, they would have had an undefeated season had it not been for the New York Giants and an amazing upset victory. Moreover, the Patriots still have to play the Broncos and they are always a challenge.
4.3 The Unknown
Finally, the unknown could play a role in whether Brady is able to return his team to the Super Bowl. Injuries, miscues, and other events could all cause problems.
There is no question that taking everything together the Patriots are definitely the favorites to win Super Bowl 51. All things being equal, this New England team probably has about a 75 percent chance of winning it all this year.
