The World Boxing Series features 8 elite boxers battling it out to become the winner of the Muhammad Ali Trophy, hailed as being the greatest prize in the sport.
On Friday 1st September Chris Eubank Jr will take on Avni Yildirim in the quarter-final of the tournament at super middleweight. The winner of the fight will move to the semi-final stage of the competition and meet either George Groves or Jamie Cox for a place in the final.
With a total prize find of $50 million, there is plenty to fight for and both boxers will believe they have what it takes to win the event.
1. Chris Eubank Jr the Favourite
There is no doubt who the favourite is coming into this fight and that’s Chris Eubank Jr. The British boxer is 1.22 with William Hill to win the fight and progress to the semi-final stages.
In his most recent fight against Arthur Abraham, Eubank Jr took control of the contest against a man who was supposed to provide a decent test. Abraham is known for having a good defence but Eubank Jr looked good in attack and opened up with some classy combinations to trouble the German-based Armenian.
When called upon to defend, Eubank Jr was up to the task and good movement ensured he could slip away to safety.
Although Eubank Jr failed to knock Abraham out, he was in total command and there was no doubting the convincing point victory which was awarded to the British fighter. Eubank Jr will be very confident of defeating Avni Yildirim on 1st September.
2. Other Bets
Avni Yildirim from Turkey is unbeaten in 16 fights, with 10 wins coming via stoppage and has regularly fought opponents in their own country. Stoppage wins over Janne Forsman and Schiller Hyppolite are some his best performances to date.
He has also sparred with James DeGale and supposedly given him a run for his money plus his last fight came in May when he outpointed Marco Antonio Periban in Mexico, having dropped him to the canvas.
Expect Yildirim to put up a very good fight, even if he fails to win the contest. This is one bout which could go all the way and this is reflected in the odds for the fight to go the distance.
In terms of the World Series as a whole, neither Eubank Jr or Yildirim is classed as favourites to win the tournament but at 4.00, the former is likely to progress to the latter stages. However, were Yildirim to cause a shock in this quarter-final fight, the 4.50 for the Turk to go all the way suddenly looks promising.
