England kick off their World Cup 2018 campaign with a match the bookmakers believe they should comfortably be winning against Tunisia on June 18.
The Three Lions will be looking to erase the memories of the 2014 World Cup, where they failed to make it out of their group after failing to beat any of Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica. They have also only made it past the last 16 once in the last four editions of this competition, so it’s fair to say that England’s ‘golden generation’ of players rather underachieved on the grandest stage of them all.
1. England vs Tunisia World Cup 2018 Preview
So how of a threat will Tunisia pose to England’s hopes of starting their campaign with a win? It’s hard to say as little is known of them outside of Africa. In their last three World Cups they have failed to win a game, and they were a tad disappointed to only make the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations in 2017.
It is noticeable too that most of their players ply their club trade in Africa, and may will not be familiar with the conditions in Russia. Okay, so it won’t be hell-ishly cold here as it tends to be in winter, but it certainly won’t offer a powerful African heat either.
There really is no reason why England can’t get the job done then, but their supporters have been here before: hoping for much, and in return getting very little from their under-achieving heroes. How will this match play out?
1.1 Tunisia vs England Winner Odds
If you were running your own sportsbook then you too would make England a heavy favourite to win this opening Group G match, and the bookmakers agree. The Three Lions can be backed at odds of 1.33 here.
Tunisia are the natural outsiders and a price of 10.00 won’t prove to be that tempting, while the draw can be backed at 5.00.

2. Tunisia vs England Predictions
England supporters have been here so many times. The weight of expectation ahead of a major tournament, the hope and the dreams, the world-class players in Paul Scholes, Steven Gerrard, David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen….and then it all falls flat.
Quite why the English have failed so spectacularly to cash in on their undoubted ability is a mystery, but clearly the psychology of the players is not strong enough to compete with the likes of Germany, France, Spain and the South American nations.
You only have to witness the abject disappointment that followed their Euro 2016 defeat to Iceland; a country that, population wise, is the same size of a standard British city.

But there are a few signs of positivity for Gareth Southgate’s men. In attack, particularly, a number of key players have matured and improved in the past 18 months: Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, Dele Alli, even the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jesse Lingard. It’s a team with genuine pace, guile and the ability to create chances; you would expect Kane to take full advantage.
Playing on European soil will aid England compared to Tunisia, and while the Three Lions have a habit of producing average performances against ‘weaker’ teams, we would expect them to at least start their World Cup 2018 campaign with a straightforward victory here.
It’s been 52 years since England last got their hands on the World Cup trophy, and if they plan to end that drought in 2018 they will need to start well here against Tunisia in their opening match. Can the Three Lions take care of business on June 18?
