Wladimir Klitschko vs Tyson Fury Betting Tips

by JohnnyBet from

While it is hard for a man who stands 6ft 9in tall to perform a giant-killing, that’s exactly what Tyson Fury achieved in November when he entered the adopted domain of Wladimir Klitschko – unbeaten in more than a decade – and stripped the Ukrainian of his WBA, IBF and WBO belts. The British boxer was priced as long as 5/1 to win the fight, and yet win it he did in a sublime show of technical boxing.

This was one of the biggest upsets in heavyweight history, and yet it was only a rematch clause that ensured Klitschko got this second date that he so thoroughly undeserves. But do battle they will on May 7, with Germany’s Allianz Arena touted as the likely venue.

1. What can we expect?

bet365 were amongst the first bookmakers to price up this fight, and their initial prices are surprising: both men are available at 10/11.

What this suggests is that they don’t really have a clue who will win the rematch – perhaps they’ve been looking up the stats, which show that in world title fights in the last 15 years, the winner of the first fight goes on to win the second on 57% of occasions. As you might imagine this is a surprisingly low figure, and suggests this bout will be a 50/50 style affair too.

The result of the first fight was convincing though: Klitschko barely threw a punch so befuddled was he by Fury’s speed, movement and ability to fight orthodox and southpaw from round-to-round. Say what you like about the brash, arrogant and occasionally even downright unpleasant British fighter, but this is a behemoth of a man with the hand speed of a welterweight. Klitschko looked utterly shell-shocked from the first bell to the last.

The judges recorded verdicts of 115-112, 115-112, 116-111, which might look close to the uninitiated but really there was only ever one winner here. It was the first defeat since 2004 for the 40-year-old, and extended Fury’s winning streak to 25 fights.

2. Our Predictions

Two things were alarming from the perspective of the Klitschko camp: one, his laboured attempts to get back into the fight when it dawned on him that he was losing badly on the cards, and two: an innate unwillingness to throw any meaningful punches, with an authoritative style being his trademark for the past decade.

He wasn’t often beaten to the punch by the younger, quicker man too, and so we have to favour Fury to get the job done again.

Klitschko’s record is phenomenal, with a knockout record that suggests the Ukrainian is a blaster – but if you look at the stats when has faced fighters with real talent in recent years (the likes of David Haye, Alexander Povetkin and Bryant Jennings), he’s needed to get the job done on points. In his bout with Fury, he was outboxed and outfoxed, and for once couldn’t use his size and strength to bully his opponent. Nobody knew how the Brit would cope with a proven elite-level performer like Klitschko. They needn’t have worried.

So back Fury to win once again at 10/11 with bet365, and if you want an odds-on shot then take him to get the verdict on the judges’ cards again at 7/4.
