Geralt of Rivia is a character who will appear in the Netflix series adaptation of Andzrej Sapkowski’s popular Witcher novel series.
At the time of writing, a release date has yet to be confirmed for the start of the series and this adds to the excitement and anticipation for fans who cannot wait to see the books transformed onto the screen.
Fans of the books will be delighted to hear Andzrej Sapkowski is to have a role in the production and will work as a as a creative consultant on the project.
In the original film adaption of the Witcher, the main protagonist, Geralt of Rivia was played by Polish actor Michal Zebrowski. Known as the ‘White Wolf’ due to his long white hair, fans have already been speculating as to who will play the character in the Netflix series.
1. Bookies Favourite
With the books and the video game attracting huge numbers of fans, the role of Geralt of Rivia is a huge position to fill and one which comes with a great deal of pressure.
One man who has huge experience when it comes to playing big roles in popular films and television series is Mads Mikkelsen. The Danish actor played Dr Hannibal Lector in the television series Hannibal with great success between 2013 and 2015, winning the Saturn Award for Best Actor on Television. He has also featured in big budget films such as Casino Royale and Rogue One.
Mikkelsen has an imposing nature on screen and can be backed at 3.50 with LVbet to play Geralt of Rivia.
2. Other Top Contenders to Become The Witcher
While Mikkelsen is the bookies favourite, there are two other names who have been strongly linked to the role.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is the man most likely to get the nod if the producers were to opt for someone who closely resembles previous Geralts. Having starred in the Game of Thrones, he knows what it takes to be part of a big fantasy television series but is he ready to take command of a lead character like Geralt? Coster-Waldau is on offer at 4.00 with LVbet.
Also available at odds of 4.00 is Josh Holloway. The American actor is best known for his roles as James "Sawyer" Ford in the television series Lost and Gabriel Vaughn in the CBS drama Intelligence.
When a film of the Witcher was strongly being considered last year, Holloway’s name was heavily linked with the role. If there was any truth in this, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to see his name crop up for the television series. Holloway certainly has the commanding presence and looks to bring Geralt of Rivia to life on the screen.
3. Outside Bets
Perhaps the best outside bet is Travis Fimmel of Vikings fame. He plays Ragnar Lothbrok in the hit TV series and this experience should hold him in good stead to play a role like Geralt of Rivia. Priced at 11.00 with LVbet, Fimmel certainly boats the necessary characteristics for the role but his inclusion in the recent Warcraft film, which was met with mixed reviews, may work against him.
Other big-name actors linked with the role include Viggo Mortensen (7.00), Tom Hardy (19.00), Michael Fassbender (21.00) and Chris Hemsworth (26.00). You can also get odds of 250.00 for Michal Zebrowski to play Geralt of Rivia, as he did in the 2001 film but as the odds suggest, this is highly unlikely.
