Cameroon vs Guinea-Bissau 2017 Africa Cup of Nations 18 January, 20:00 pm (GMT+1) Stade de l’Amitié Sino, Libreville (GAB)
One of the favourites for the African Cup of Nations 2017, Cameroon, is in action once again on January 18, and they will need to take three points from an awkward opponent in Guinea-Bissau if they plan on meeting their pre-tournament objectives.
They had been dealt a huge blow before a ball was even kicked by the news that Joel Matip, the excellent Liverpool defender, would not meet up with the squad, as he and a litany of others (including Allan Nyom, Maxime Poundje and Ibrahim Amadou) decided to stay with their clubs instead of participating in AFCON 2017. That is a cruel blow to their chances, but clearly great news for Guinea.
1. The Bookies Choice
The underdogs qualified with ease from Group E which contained the capable Congo and Zambia, and while their squad is lacking recognisable talent they will at least work hard for one another.
But this Cameroon squad is laced with talent from front to back, and they will be expecting to claim the win that takes them to the brink of knockout phase qualification here.
It’s no surprise to learn that the bookmakers have made Cameroon their heavy favourites, with Bet365 amongst the industry best priced at 1.50.
Guinea-Bissau are the undoubted underdogs at 7.50, while the draw can be backed at 3.75 with the same bookmaker.
2. Cameroon vs Guinea Betting Tips
A squad containing the likes of Vincent Aboubakar, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Edgar Salli and Nicolas N’Koulou has to be given respect, and that explains why Cameroon are the hot favourites for glory here.
They showed their class in qualifying, finishing top of Group M by six clear points from Mauritania and South Africa, and while 2015 was very much an AFCON to forget for Hugo Broos’ side, they look ready to show the continent what they have been missing.
Underestimate Guinea-Bissau at your peril, however. They may have tasted defeat twice in qualifying to Congo and Kenya, but they showed plenty of resilience in bouncing back to finish top of the pile, and lest we forget they were one of the sides that finished above Cameroon in their AFCON 2015 group. The favourites will need to be at the top of their game here to secure the result they are looking for.
But it is hard to overlook this experienced Cameroon side, who will boast an advantage in both quality and big stage nous over their opponents. The likes of N’Koulou, Henri Bedimo, Aboubakar and Salli have more than 200 international caps between them, and in high pressure knockout football that can prove all important. The majority of their players are operating in European football’s top divisions too, including Ligue 1, the Bundesliga the Turkish Super Lig.
And so, while we don’t expect this to be the walkover that the bookies are predicting, we still have to fancy a Cameroon victory here.
